It’s probably one of the reasons why we especially like South Asian and multi-cultural weddings. The brilliant, bold colors carry throughout the entire wedding. From colorful saris to magical mandaps, South Asian weddings pop with color.

Wiping The Slate Clean

According to colormeaning.com ‘white is the color of new beginnings — wiping the slate clean. The color white is a blank canvas, just waiting to be written on.’

In western culture, white weddings have been popular since the wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert in the late 1800s. She broke from tradition with a white wedding gown so that she could showcase lace in England’s growing cottage lace industry.

White wedding gowns, bridal bouquets, and wedding cakes are still popular today – but things are changing!

Luxurious Hunter Green and Gold Styled Shoot at PAFA

Our Elegant Events Florist team was recently invited to be part of an incredible styled shoot at the iconic Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts – known to most as PAFA! This is the first and oldest art museum and art school in the country, founded in 1805.

While many people are familiar with the architecture of the ‘old building,’ we were invited to showcase the more modern Hamilton Building.

Diversity and Inclusion

The event management team of PAFA reached out to our good friend Donielle Warren of Elegant Events to create a styled shoot. Not only did their team want to showcase the event potential for this modern gallery, but also inclusion and diversity.

They are making a conscious effort to reach more people of color. They are hoping that black and brown couples will consider the venue for their wedding day and create great working relationships with more black-owned businesses in Philadelphia.

Details and Design: Wedding Ceremony

Designing a wedding in a modern art gallery, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, there will typically be significant amounts of very light-colored walls. They are intended to really make the artwork stand out. So, we were sure to take full advantage of that, creating elements to pop against the background.

Secondly, look to center your wedding ceremony on a large piece of artwork. The two ceremony pieces framed the couple perfectly, with the artwork in the background.

Tall modern gold tone risers lifted tall arrangement to be in scale with the artwork and event space. The shimmering modern trumpet cases added a little sparkle against the background and the floral piece’s deep rich tones. Loose, lush arrangements with multiple types of greenery stood out with some light green hydrangea and some soft white and blush florals.

Designing with a Focal Point

A sweetheart table is one of the most photographed elements at a wedding. But, unfortunately, it can be overlooked or not showcase the couple well.

We love working with luxurious lounge furniture for a sweetheart table. A tufted love seat can be the perfect size and scale for a sweetheart table. The gold roping on the arms added a touch of elegance and brought in some additional gold.

Our design team also repurposed the ceremony arrangements on either side of the table to add height. In addition, it framed the table against the gallery background.

The remaining design elements are the ones most often overlooked. For the majority of the wedding reception, the couple will be seated behind the table. Too often, designers add elements in the center that can block views of the guests of honor.

The modern gold candelabra with hunter green taper candles framed the couple and brought in color. A lush blanket of greenery and pink and white floral touches tied the entire look together while not blocking the couple.

We finished the look with a few gold votive candles and a modern gold heart sculpture between the couple.

Guest Experience: A Modern Design

Last but certainly not least in our styled shoot was the reception seating. The modern gallery, open spaces, and light-colored walls, the hunter green and gold elements were show stoppers.

A modern space with lots of clean lines begs for some softness. So our sleek modern gold and glass tables were softened with a wide flowing hunter-green fabric runner that extended all the way to the floor on both ends.

We continued the vibe begun on the sweetheart table with modern gold candlesticks with hunter green taper candles and soft, loose floral arrangements with blush and white flowers.

The tall gold risers not only tied in the structure from the ceremony décor we repurposed for the sweetheart table but added a great focal point to draw your eyes up in the room. The thick canopy of flowers and loose greenery floated about the table with just a few soft tendrils cascading down.

A Change of Destination For 2021 Weddings

As the world continues to change while living with COVID -19, our Elegant Events Florist team is keeping on top of what might be in store for weddings. Everyone is anxious to see what Philadelphia weddings and weddings around the world will look like.

One of the areas we see changing, at least into the middle of 2021, will be destination weddings.

Travel for Destination Weddings

As countries around the world begin to slowly open their borders, we see that in the near future, many overseas flights may be reduced. We’ve also seen comments from foreign countries about possible 14-day quarantines for international visitors.

Couple that with the uncertainty of operations at boutique resorts, most in communities that have been without business and what we see are foreign destination weddings that may take a while to come back.

Ways to Still Celebrate Your Cancelled/Postponed Wedding Date

With COVID-19 putting a damper on wedding dates from March 2020 until who knows when, couples all over the world have had to cancel or postpone their big day after planning for months or even years. We sympathize and acknowledge how hard this must be for everyone. This is why we want to provide some ideas for couples to do on their original wedding date to make sure they can still make this day one to remember.

Have a Ceremony in Your Home: If you have decided not to postpone the wedding and instead just elope, why not have a ceremony in your home that you can have with just your immediate family or share over a Google Hangout or Zoom video?
Have a Party! You can still have a celebration (over Google Hangout or Zoom of course). Try having a “party” in your home and invite your guests to join in a toast and some dancing and reminiscing over Google Hangout or Zoom.
Have a Romantic Date “Wedding” Night. Order food from your favorite restaurant, get a bottle of your favorite wine or make your wedding specialty cocktail, and have a quiet and romantic night in with just the two of you.
a. Exchange your vows or love letters you originally wrote.
b. Bust out old photos and reminisce on all the years you have been together.
c. You can even make this night “themed” and have it decorated either similar to your wedding colors or to wherever you were planning on going for your honeymoon.
Eat Cake! Who says you can’t still have a wedding cake on a cancelled/postponed wedding day? Order a cake similar to your original one (a smaller size of course), and share it with your significant other.
Have a Photoshoot. Get dressed up and have a mini photoshoot to remember the day by. You can even get these printed and displayed at your later wedding date.
- You will also want to ensure whatever photographer you hire, is still aware of the “social distancing” rules when doing this mini photoshoot.
Have someone organize a car parade for you! With the whole “social distancing” rule, many people are gathering together in their cars for birthdays and postponed events like weddings). Just have everyone gather in a parking lot or a neighborhood and hang out in their car from a distance.
- You can also just ask others to drive by your home to say hi and chat (from a distance).
Have your first dance. Turn on your song and have your first dance right there in your living room.
Play virtual games with your wedding party. Get everyone on Zoom, Google Hangouts or any platform where you can interact and play games with your entire wedding party.

For those interested on how they can show their support to a couple who had to postpone/cancel their big day, see below for some ideas.

Send them wine, champagne or their favorite alcoholic beverage ingredients.
Send them dinner from their favorite restaurant.
Send them a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
Send them money to help pay for any fees they had to pay in order to cancel or postpone their big day.
Give them a call to just chat and see how they are doing.
Drive by their house and have them come outside to say hi from your car. You can even bring a sign or decorate your car to show you are thinking of them!
Ask them if there is anything you can do for them to make their day easier and happier (volunteer to go grocery shopping for them, run any errands, deliver them food, etc).
